Rescue is greatly concerned to have been informed that the City of London Corporation have removed their archaeological advisor post, and that currently, there appears to be no archaeological curatorial service for the area they administer.
Central London contains one of the UK’s richest and most significant archaeological landscapes, a fact which has been reinforced time and again through numerous archaeological studies. It is unacceptable that such an important and high-profile area should have no archaeological oversight, particularly given the planning pressure that the area is constantly under. We have written to the City of London Corporation requesting clarification of the situation, what measures are in place to ensure archaeology is appropriately considered in development and how planning decisions taken by the authority will be NPPF compliant. We will post updates as and when a response is received.
